BP confirms oil spill into Lake Michigan from Whiting refinery

“It remains unclear how much oil spilled into the lake or how long the discharge continued. Workers at the refinery reported an oil sheen on the water about 4:30 p.m. Monday, and an official from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said the leak was plugged by the time he arrived at 9 p.m.

Mike Beslow, the EPA’s emergency response coordinator, said there appeared to be no negative effects on Lake Michigan, the source of drinking water for 7 million people in Chicago and the suburbs. The 68th Street water intake crib is about eight miles northwest of the spill site, but there were no signs of oil drifting in that direction.

Initial reports suggest that strong winds pushed most of the oil toward a sandy cove on BP’s property between the refinery and an Arcelor Mittal steel mill. A flyover Tuesday afternoon revealed no visible oil beyond booms laid on the water to prevent the oil from spreading, Beslow said.

“There is no known impact to wildlife or human health at this time,” Beslow said.

Frigid temperatures caused some of the oil to harden into a waxy consistency that made it easier to collect, said Scott Dean, a BP spokesman. Crews used vacuum trucks to suck up any liquid oil that washed ashore.”

Yellowstone River Spill: Exxon Reaches $1.6 Million Settlement

“Exxon Mobil agreed Thursday to pay the state of Montana $1.6 million in penalties over water pollution caused by a pipeline break last summer that fouled dozens of miles of shoreline along the scenic Yellowstone River.

Montana Department of Environmental Quality director Richard Opper told The Associated Press that the penalty marks the largest in the agency’s history.

The Texas oil company will pay $300,000 in cash and spend $1.3 million on future environmental projects, Opper said.

Also Thursday, Exxon increased its estimate of how much crude spilled into the river during the July 1 accident near Laurel to 1,509 barrels, or more than 63,000 gallons.

That’s up from earlier estimates of 1,000 barrels spilled — a number that Gov. Brian Schweitzer had disputed as too low.

Only about 10 barrels of crude were recovered by cleanup crews. That’s less than 1 percent of the total spilled, federal officials have said.

Thursday’s settlement over water pollution violations came after more than three months of negotiations between attorneys for Exxon and the state. It contains provisions to shield the company against any future lawsuits from state agencies, although it will not become final until after a 30-day comment period.”

“A Chinese ship is in danger of breaking up after running aground off north-east Australia, sparking fears of a major oil spill into the Great Barrier Reef.

“The Shen Neng 1, carrying 950 tonnes of oil, ran aground 70km (43 miles) off the east coast of Great Keppel Island.

“Some oil has already leaked and there are fears the coal-carrier may split into parts, causing a greater spillage.”
